Andrew Snowball

Bsc (Hons) CEng MICE TIStructE

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 20 years’ experience across the civil, structural, and rail sectors, delivering projects in the UK and internationally.

I am a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Technician Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers. I currently serve as Regional Chair for the North East Region of the Institution of Structural Engineers and have previously served on council, panels, and committees, contributing to the development of the profession beyond day-to-day engineering work.

Throughout my career I have worked across a wide range of projects, from major residential developments and infrastructure schemes to bespoke private homes. This breadth of experience allows me to approach projects with a clear understanding of both technical performance and how structures are actually delivered on site.

I have extensive experience in the design of steel framed structures and in the alteration, extension, and repurposing of existing buildings. Many projects today involve adapting what already exists rather than building entirely new structures, and I have been involved in numerous cut-and-carve schemes where buildings are carefully modified, strengthened, or extended to support new uses. These projects require careful engineering judgement to ensure structural integrity is maintained while enabling practical and cost-effective construction.

I have worked with major volume house builders including Avant Homes, Barratt Developments, David Wilson Homes, Redrow, Taylor Wimpey, and Strata Homes, alongside many other regional and national developers. This experience provides a strong understanding of how residential buildings are designed, detailed, and constructed at scale, as well as the commercial and programme pressures associated with live development sites.

Alongside this, I have designed a wide range of bespoke and high-end private homes, including custom properties with balconies, extensive glazed elevations, and swimming pools. These projects require close collaboration between architect and engineer to ensure that ambitious architectural ideas are delivered safely, efficiently, and without unnecessary structural complexity.

Internationally, I have worked in Qatar where I was involved in the design of underground station platforms in Lusail as part of a major rail infrastructure programme. Experience gained on large, complex infrastructure projects brings a level of rigour, coordination, and problem-solving that benefits projects of every scale.

Through Finitas Engineering, I apply this breadth of experience directly to homeowners, builders, developers, and project teams. My approach focuses on clear communication, practical engineering judgement, and solutions that are both robust and buildable.

Where possible, I aim to design in a way that is both sustainable and pragmatic. This often involves making better use of existing structures, reducing unnecessary material use, and ensuring designs remain practical to construct. Good engineering balances environmental responsibility with buildability and cost, rather than pursuing theoretical efficiency that cannot be delivered on site.

Clients value dealing with me directly, knowing that the advice they receive is considered, accountable, and grounded in real construction experience. One client described me as “the Rolls-Royce of engineers”, which I take as recognition of quality, reliability, and attention to detail.

Leadership and governance

Alongside my engineering practice, I hold senior governance roles, including serving as a Director and Trustee of Changing Futures North East and as Board Chair of Green Genes Therapeutics Ltd.

These roles involve strategic leadership, oversight of risk and compliance, and long-term decision-making at board level. They reinforce the professional judgement, accountability, and responsibility I bring to my engineering work.
